Pakistan Army Chief Commits to Industrial Revival

On July 21, 2025, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Field Marshal Asim Munir, met with a delegation of prominent business leaders at the General Headquarters in Karachi to discuss strategies for revitalizing the nation’s industrial sector. The meeting, which extended for nearly four hours, focused on addressing key challenges faced by manufacturers and exporters, including high energy costs, elevated interest rates, and recent tax policies that have raised concerns within the business community.

The COAS expressed strong commitment to supporting efforts to strengthen Pakistan’s economy, emphasizing the need for competitive power tariffs to bolster the industrial and export sectors. Business leaders, including representatives from the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), highlighted issues such as the expanded powers of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), particularly provisions allowing for arrests and detentions under the Sales Tax Act. In response, Field Marshal Munir directed that these provisions be paused, providing relief to the business community.

The discussions also covered broader economic goals, with the COAS encouraging collaboration between the government, military, and private sector to foster investor confidence and promote sustainable growth. The business delegation expressed optimism about the potential for Pakistan’s industries to thrive with coordinated support, citing the army’s role in facilitating economic stability.

This commitment aligns with ongoing efforts to address liquidity constraints and improve the business environment, as seen in previous initiatives like the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), which aims to streamline investment processes. The meeting underscored a unified approach to tackling economic hurdles, with a focus on reducing operational costs for industries and enhancing Pakistan’s global competitiveness.
