Pakistan has welcomed the recent agreement between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a Kurdish-led coalition, urging Damascus to pursue an inclusive political transition towards stability. On February 16, 2026, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan‘s permanent representative to the United Nations, addressed the UN Security Council, emphasizing the importance of this development.
Ambassador Ahmad stated, ‘We expect that its faithful implementation will bring stability and strengthen Syria’s unity and territorial integrity.’ He noted that over the past fourteen months, significant steps have been made in advancing Syria’s political transition, reflecting progress towards stabilization after years of conflict.
The ambassador praised recent state initiatives, including the January 16 presidential decree concerning Kurdish community rights, as constructive steps towards national cohesion. However, he acknowledged persistent challenges, particularly the threat of terrorism. Groups such as ETIM pose serious risks to Syria’s stability and regional security, necessitating coordinated counter-terrorism efforts.
Ahmad highlighted the grave humanitarian situation, with millions of Syrians requiring sustained assistance. He stressed the importance of ensuring safe humanitarian access and shifting towards economic recovery with the lifting of sanctions. Additionally, he reiterated Pakistan’s condemnation of Israeli violations of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.
