The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) announced the 5G spectrum auction will occur on March 10, 2026, with no expected changes to the schedule. This move is anticipated to boost telecom companies earnings in Pakistan.

A total of 597 megahertz (MHz) across various bands will be available, with existing operators required to purchase at least 100 MHz. The auction will use a multi-round electronic clock format, beginning with the 2,600 MHz and 3,500 MHz bands. Following the auction, the 5G rollout is expected within three to six months, contingent on infrastructure installations.

PTA Chairman Major General (Retd) Hafeezur Rehman emphasized improved service quality and data speed, noting that the average revenue per user (ARPU) has increased from $0.7 to $1.3. He projected a 25% improvement in mobile broadband speed post-auction, highlighting government incentives and increased obligations for service quality and coverage.

The government has removed the right-of-way fee, encouraging fiberisation projects. Telecom operators have already ordered 5G equipment, and local manufacturing of 5G-enabled smartphones is underway with 500,000 to 600,000 units produced. Operators have one year to invest without upfront spectrum payments, focusing on service improvement.

Expansion will extend 5G coverage beyond major cities like Islamabad and Karachi, aiming for a fiber-to-the-site ratio increase from 20% to 35% by 2035. Minimum download speeds for 4G and 5G will rise significantly by 2030-35, with reduced latency targets. Applications and a $15 million bank guarantee are due by February 27, with mock auctions preceding the main event.
