Pakistan’s Software Service Exports Cross $1 Billion Milestone

Pakistan’s IT sector has achieved a significant milestone, with software services exports exceeding $1 billion over an 11-month period, marking a historic first for the country. Data from the State Bank of Pakistan highlights this growth, reflecting a 23.7% increase in IT and IT-enabled services (ITeS) exports, reaching $2.825 billion from July to March in the fiscal year 2024-25. This surge underscores the sector’s growing contribution to the national economy, driven by a combination of government policies, a skilled freelance workforce, and increasing global demand for Pakistani tech talent.

The IT industry’s success is bolstered by freelancers, who contributed $400 million in foreign exchange earnings, and a robust startup ecosystem supported by initiatives like the Pakistan Software Export Board’s e-Rozgaar centers. These efforts aim to create 20,000 jobs by 2027 while fostering digital innovation. Posts on X echo this optimism, noting the sector’s potential to reach $25 billion in exports by 2029, with countries like the UAE and Saudi Arabia showing keen interest in Pakistan’s tech professionals.

Despite economic challenges, including a $24.4 billion trade deficit and foreign exchange reserves at $11.5 billion by June 2025, the IT sector’s $2.4 billion trade surplus stands out as a bright spot. However, recent exits by global tech firms like Microsoft highlight the need for sustained policy reforms to maintain investor confidence and support long-term growth in Pakistan’s digital economy.
