Pakistan has announced a comprehensive national energy conservation plan in response to growing concerns over the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and escalating tensions in the Middle East. The plan aims to reduce dependency on imported petroleum products and re-liquefied natural gas (RLNG).

An emergency meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on March 9, 2026, reviewed the plan, which includes measures reminiscent of those implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic. These include austerity measures, work-from-home policies, and increased public holidays.

The government intends to strictly monitor global oil prices and supply conditions. LNG, LPG, and natural gas will be prioritized for essential sectors. The plan also proposes online classes and remote work arrangements for educational institutions and private sectors.

The energy conservation strategy is divided into three phases, starting with the public sector, followed by private educational and healthcare institutions. The plan, prepared by a committee led by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, awaits final approval from the Prime Minister.

Prime Minister Sharif emphasized the need for equitable austerity across all societal segments, urging privileged classes to lead by example. He reassured that industrial and agricultural sectors would be exempt from austerity to protect domestic production and food security.

The government is preparing for potential disruptions in energy supplies, with diplomatic efforts underway to secure alternative routes and sources. Coordination between federal and provincial authorities is being strengthened to prevent hoarding and ensure smooth distribution of petroleum products.

Meetings with provincial leaders highlighted the challenges posed by rising global oil prices. The government is closely monitoring the situation, with contingency plans in place to manage financial impacts. Pakistan’s economic stability remains a priority amid the uncertain global energy environment.
