PM Modi convened a high-level meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) on March 2, 2026, to assess the escalating conflict in the Middle East following recent US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran. The meeting, held in New Delhi, was called to address the safety of the Indian diaspora and the broader implications for regional stability.

The CCS was briefed on the situation, including the February 28 airstrikes and subsequent tensions impacting several Gulf nations. A statement from the Press Information Bureau highlighted the committee’s serious concerns for the 9.6 million Indian nationals residing in the region, particularly the 10,000 in Iran. The committee directed relevant departments to implement feasible measures to assist those affected, emphasizing the importance of diplomatic dialogue.

With several countries closing their airspace and reports of missile and drone attacks, New Delhi is closely monitoring developments. The CCS discussed the challenges faced by Indian travelers and students in the region, as well as the potential impact on economic and commercial activities. Despite the volatile security environment, officials noted that immediate evacuations are not being considered due to airspace closures.

This meeting followed Prime Minister Modi’s recent diplomatic engagements, including a visit to Israel where he strengthened bilateral ties. The ongoing conflict places India in a sensitive position, balancing strategic alliances while ensuring the safety of its citizens abroad. The Ministry of External Affairs has issued advisories urging caution and activated helplines in affected regions.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has been in contact with his counterparts in Iran and Israel, expressing India’s deep concern and advocating for restraint. The CCS reiterated the necessity for an early cessation of hostilities and a return to diplomatic negotiations, aligning with India’s stance on respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity.
