The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued an emergency advisory to telecom operators, calling for uninterrupted mobile and internet services amid intense monsoon rains and widespread flooding across the country. The advisory specifically highlights vulnerable regions such as Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and parts of Punjab, where landslides and flash floods have severely impacted daily life.

To ensure service continuity, the PTA has activated the National Emergency Telecommunication Coordination Centre (NETCC). This body will monitor network performance, facilitate coordination between stakeholders, and oversee emergency preparedness within the telecom sector.

Telecom operators have been directed to:

  • Safeguard infrastructure in high-risk flood-prone zones
  • Deploy temporary mobile units (Cell on Wheels) in the most affected areas
  • Maintain sufficient fuel supplies and spare parts for backup systems
  • Share network restoration updates with the PTA every six hours
  • Prioritize connectivity for emergency services and relief efforts

This move comes in response to growing concerns over public safety and the need for robust communication during climate-induced disasters. Social media reactions, especially on X (formerly Twitter), have largely supported the PTA’s efforts, with users acknowledging the crucial role telecom plays in both emergency coordination and connecting affected communities.

As extreme weather events become more frequent, the PTA’s proactive approach underlines the importance of digital infrastructure resilience during humanitarian crises.
