The Punjab government has allocated Rs42 billion to advance the Apni Chhat Apna Ghar scheme, a major initiative to provide affordable housing for low-income families across the province. Led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the program aims to construct 100,000 homes, offering interest-free loans of up to Rs1.5 million to eligible residents. These loans, repayable over seven years with monthly instalments as low as Rs14,000, target landowners with plots of 1 to 5 marlas in urban areas and 1 to 10 marlas in rural regions.
The scheme has made significant progress, with over 51,911 families receiving loans and more than 34,000 homes under construction. The government covers 60% of the housing costs, reducing the financial burden on beneficiaries, who contribute a 40% down payment. An online portal (acag.punjab.gov.pk) simplifies the application process, and a helpline (0800-09100) provides support. Offline applications are also available at Deputy Commissioner offices for those without internet access.
This initiative not only addresses housing shortages but also aims to improve living conditions, reduce overcrowding, and ensure access to basic amenities like water, sanitation, and electricity. The construction of these homes is expected to create approximately 500,000 jobs, boosting Punjab’s economy. Recent posts on X highlight the scheme’s impact, noting that thousands of houses are nearing completion, reflecting strong public support for the program.
The Apni Chhat Apna Ghar scheme, alongside the related Apni Zameen Apna Ghar initiative offering free 3-marla plots to the homeless, underscores Punjab’s commitment to tackling housing insecurity. With transparent processes and a focus on underserved communities, the program is a step toward equitable homeownership for Punjab’s residents.
