Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has ordered authorities to address the spread of hateful content on social media platforms, emphasizing the need for peace during the sensitive period of Muharram. The directive focuses on curbing posts that promote sectarianism or division, with instructions for immediate arrests of those responsible.
The decision follows heightened concerns over online content that could disrupt harmony, particularly as over 38,000 gatherings and 9,200 mourning processions are expected across Punjab during Muharram, secured by more than 232,000 police personnel. The Chief Minister has also banned drone usage during processions and prohibited wall writings that spread divisive messages.
Recent posts on X reflect public attention to this issue, with users noting the government’s push to monitor social media for inflammatory content. This aligns with broader efforts in Punjab to regulate online spaces, including actions against vulgar or harmful posts, as seen in prior initiatives by the Punjab Police’s Cyber Crime Division.
The government’s measures aim to ensure safety and maintain order, reinforcing the role of social media as a space for constructive dialogue rather than conflict. Authorities are also collaborating with social media platforms to enhance content moderation and swiftly remove posts that violate community standards, ensuring a safer online environment for all users during this critical time.
