Russia India Oil: On April 3, 2026, Russia offered to enhance its oil and natural gas supplies to India during bilateral talks in New Delhi. Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to discuss advancing cooperation in critical sectors such as energy and fertilisers.
Prime Minister Modi highlighted the mutual benefits of cooperation in trade, fertilisers, connectivity, and people-to-people ties. He praised the efforts to implement outcomes from the India-Russia Summit held during President Vladimir Putin’s visit to New Delhi last December.
Minister Jaishankar emphasized bilateral cooperation in trade, industry, energy, and fertilisers. He noted discussions on new opportunities in technology, innovation, and critical minerals. Regional and global developments, including the conflict in West Asia, were also on the agenda.
The Russian embassy confirmed Russia’s capacity to increase oil and liquefied natural gas supplies to India. Manturov noted a 40% increase in mineral fertiliser supplies to India by the end of 2025 and the development of a joint carbamide production project.
India faces disruptions in energy and fertiliser supplies due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, triggered by military strikes on Iran. Russia has emerged as India’s largest energy supplier, following a US waiver on sanctions.
Manturov, co-chair of the Russia-India Intergovernmental Commission, also met with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Expanding trade, investment, and industrial cooperation were key topics of discussion.
Russia and India are strengthening their nuclear energy partnership, with ongoing projects like the Kudankulam nuclear power plant. Manturov’s visit follows India’s acquisition of additional S-400 air defence systems from Russia, despite potential US sanctions.
