Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Doha on February 23, 2026, for a crucial two-day visit to meet with the Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The visit comes amid escalating tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, as well as other pressing regional issues.
The agenda includes discussions on the Gaza peace plan and the US-Iran standoff. This marks Sharif’s third visit to Qatar in five months, highlighting the strategic importance of Islamabad-Doha relations. Previously, Sharif visited to express solidarity with Qatar after Israeli strikes and to attend the Arab-Islamic summit.
The visit follows Pakistan’s recent cross-border strikes in Afghanistan targeting terrorist hideouts, further straining ties with Kabul. Sharif is expected to brief the Qatari leadership on Pakistan’s security concerns, particularly the use of Afghan territory by militants.
Qatar has historically played a mediatory role between Pakistan and Afghanistan, facilitating backchannel contacts and ceasefires. With the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and tensions between the US and Iran, Doha’s diplomatic engagement is crucial.
Beyond security, the visit aims to explore economic collaboration, energy partnerships, and people-to-people exchanges. Both nations are committed to strengthening ties and ensuring regional stability.
