Tesla, the U.S.-based electric vehicle manufacturer, will open its first Indian showroom in Mumbai on July 15, 2025, marking its official entry into the country’s automotive market. Located in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) at Maker Maxity, the 4,000-square-foot “experience center” aims to showcase Tesla’s vehicles, starting with the Model Y rear-wheel-drive SUV, imported from its Shanghai factory.
The company secured a five-year lease for the Mumbai showroom in February 2025, with a monthly rent of approximately ₹35 lakh, reflecting India’s high commercial real estate costs. Tesla has also leased a 24,500-square-foot service center in Mumbai’s Kurla West and plans to open another showroom in New Delhi’s Aerocity, signaling a broader expansion strategy. Posts on X highlight public excitement, noting Tesla’s entry as a boost to India’s growing electric vehicle ecosystem.
India’s high import duties, at 70% for fully built vehicles under $40,000, pose a pricing challenge, with the Model Y expected to cost over $56,000 before taxes. Despite this, Tesla’s focus on premium business districts targets affluent buyers. The company has ramped up hiring for sales, service, and operations roles across Mumbai and Delhi to support its rollout.
While Tesla currently has no plans to manufacture in India, its entry aligns with the country’s push for electric mobility, supported by government incentives and a growing charging infrastructure. The Mumbai showroom opening marks a significant step for Tesla in tapping into the world’s third-largest auto market, with the potential to reshape India’s EV landscape.
