On July 6, 2025, Pakistan observes Yaum-i-Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, with solemn processions across the country to honor the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his companions at the Battle of Karbala. These Ashura processions, underway across the country amid tight security, reflect deep reverence and mourning, drawing thousands of participants in cities like Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Islamabad.

In Karachi, the central procession began at Nishtar Park around 8:30 AM, led by Allama Shahenshah Hussain Naqvi, with an estimated 3,500 to 4,000 mourners. The procession follows traditional routes, culminating at Hussainiya Iranian Imambargah in Kharadar. Authorities have deployed over 7,500 police personnel, including snipers and commandos, to ensure safety. MA Jinnah Road and nearby markets, such as Saddar and Empress Market, are sealed, and mobile services are partially suspended along procession routes to mitigate risks.

Lahore’s main procession started from Nisar Haveli at Mochi Gate, moving through Kashmiri Bazaar and Bhati Gate before concluding at Karbala Gaamay Shah for Shaam-e-Ghareeban. Punjab has mobilized over 12,000 rescuers, 815 ambulances, and 2,166 motorbikes under the guidance of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to support mourners and maintain order. In Rawalpindi, 65 processions, including 16 deemed highly sensitive, are monitored by 2,000 CCTV cameras and 8,000 security personnel, with snipers positioned on rooftops.

Islamabad has deployed over 4,000 police officers to secure 12 processions and 48 religious gatherings, with 57 security checkpoints and drone surveillance ensuring comprehensive monitoring. In Multan, 116 processions and 130 majalis are under strict surveillance, with 6,000 security personnel and 180 CCTV cameras in place. Similar measures are implemented in Peshawar, Quetta, and Gilgit-Baltistan, where processions follow traditional routes with heightened security, including bans on pillion riding and restrictions on movement in sensitive areas.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued messages emphasizing the lessons of sacrifice, truth, and resilience from Karbala, urging the nation to uphold these values. Volunteers across cities have set up sabeels for water and food distribution, while blood donation camps reflect the community’s commitment to honoring the martyrs.

The Ashura processions underway across the country amid tight security highlight Pakistan’s dedication to maintaining peace during this sacred observance. Authorities remain vigilant, with real-time monitoring and coordination between federal and provincial governments to ensure the safety of all participants.
