Tripura By-Election Preparations for the Dharmanagar assembly constituency in north Tripura are underway as officials anticipate the announcement of the election schedule. This follows the vacancy left by the late Assembly Speaker Biswabandhu Sen, who passed away on December 26, 2025.
Mr. Sen initially represented the constituency as a Congress nominee before joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2018 Assembly elections, which marked the first BJP-led government in Tripura.
The Chief Electoral Officer’s office in the state has started preparations for the by-election following directives from the election commission. An updated voter list for the constituency has been published, showing a total of 46,143 registered voters, though adjustments may be made if discrepancies are found.
Mr. Sen secured victory in the February 2023 elections by a moderate margin against Congress’s Chayan Bhattacharjya, who is expected to be renominated for the upcoming by-election.
The Congress and CPI(M) had previously formed an electoral alliance, but tensions have strained their relationship over the past year. Neither party has disclosed its strategy for the by-election yet.
