On February 5, 2026, the UN Security Council condemned the recent terrorist attacks in Balochistan, Pakistan, which resulted in the deaths of 48 individuals, including civilians and security personnel. The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for these attacks, described as ‘heinous and cowardly’ by the Council.

The Council’s statement, issued by the UK’s Charge A’affaires James Kariuki, emphasized the need to hold the perpetrators accountable and urged international cooperation to support Pakistan. The attacks, which have claimed over 250 lives since they began, have been linked to India-sponsored groups, according to Pakistani officials.

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, appealed to the Security Council to designate the BLA as a terrorist organization under the 1267 sanctions regime. He highlighted Pakistan’s sacrifices in the global fight against terrorism, noting the heavy toll on the nation.

The situation in Balochistan has deteriorated, with proxy groups operating with impunity from neighboring regions. The Security Council’s condemnation is seen as a significant step, but the path forward requires decisive international action to prevent further escalation.
