UNSC Report: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has released a report confirming that attacks on Pakistan by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) from Afghanistan have increased. This report, dated February 4, 2026, supports Islamabad’s longstanding concerns about militant sanctuaries across the border. Recent violence in Pakistan, including a suicide bombing at Imambargah Khadijah al-Kubra that killed 33 people, underscores the escalating threat.
The UNSC’s 37th report by the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team highlights Afghanistan’s role as a sanctuary for terrorist groups like TTP, which have intensified their attacks on Pakistan. The report details military confrontations and the complex nature of these attacks, often involving large numbers of fighters. It also mentions the death of Mufti Muzahim, the TTP deputy emir, in a Pakistani operation.
Regional relations remain fragile, with the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant-Khorasan (ISIL-K) under pressure but still capable of external operations. The report indicates that Afghan authorities have failed to control terrorist groups, with TTP and Al Qaeda receiving support. Concerns about cross-border attacks and radicalization persist among regional countries.
The report also addresses the Baloch Liberation Army’s (BLA) activities, which include attacks on Pakistani security forces and China-Pakistan Economic Corridor projects. Despite counter-terrorism efforts, the BLA remains active, collaborating with TTP and ISIL-K. The report warns of potential alliances among terrorist factions in Afghanistan, impacting regional stability.
Looking forward, the UNSC emphasizes the need for coordinated regional efforts to address these threats. The potential movement of fighters and the proliferation of modern weapons in Afghanistan pose ongoing challenges. The report calls for vigilance and enhanced counter-terrorism strategies to mitigate risks.
