The United States has launched a US Probe into 60 global economies, including India, to evaluate their actions regarding the importation of goods produced with forced labor. The investigation, announced on March 13, 2026, is led by US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

Greer stated, “Despite international consensus against forced labor, many governments have not effectively enforced bans on goods produced under such conditions.” The probe follows the Trump administration’s recent initiative to scrutinize 16 economies over their manufacturing practices to determine if they burden or restrict US commerce.

Apart from India, the list includes major economies such as China, Russia, and Pakistan. The investigation will be conducted under Section 301(b) of the Trade Act of 1974, which addresses unfair foreign practices impacting US businesses. Hearings related to the investigation are scheduled for April.

This development coincides with President Donald Trump’s efforts to revive tariffs after the Supreme Court invalidated previous duties. A new 10% global tariff under Section 122 of the Trade Act is currently in place, set to expire in July. Trump emphasized the need for alternative measures following the court’s decision, stating, “I have lots of other ways of doing the same thing.”

Greer aims to conclude the Section 301 investigations, including any proposed remedies, before the temporary tariffs expire. The outcome of these probes could significantly impact international trade relations and economic policies.
