Uttarakhand Avalanche Warning Risk Heightens in Uttarakhand Following Fresh Snowfall

An Uttarakhand avalanche warning has been issued for several high-altitude areas of Uttarakhand, including Badrinath and Kedarnath, following a fresh spell of snowfall. This marks the second high-altitude snowfall in the region within a week, following heavy snow on January 23, 2026.

The Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority has alerted all districts about the potential for an Uttarakhand avalanche warning, based on forecasts from the Defence Geo-Informatics Research Establishment. Snowfall and avalanches are expected from 5 PM on January 27 to 5 PM on January 28, 2026, in various high-altitude regions.

Intermittent snowfall has been observed since the night of January 26, 2026, in Badrinath, Chamoli district, and Kedarnath, Rudraprayag district, as well as higher reaches of Uttarkashi district. Chakrata also experienced snowfall, attracting tourists, while Auli ski resort and high peaks around Munsiyari in Pithoragarh district received fresh snow.

The Meteorological Department issued an orange alert, leading to school closures in several districts. Uttarkashi, Chamoli, and Rudraprayag are in the ‘orange’ category, indicating deep and unstable snow cover. Pithoragarh is in the ‘yellow’ category, with unstable snow on some paths. Schools up to class 12 are closed in Tehri, Uttarkashi, Almora, Rudraprayag, Pithoragarh, and Udham Singh Nagar.
