India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, along with other South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, SAARC leaders, may attend the upcoming oath ceremony of Bangladesh’s new government on February 17, 2026. This event, organized by Bangladesh’s interim government, marks the formal establishment of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) after their decisive victory in the 13th National Parliamentary Election.

The BNP secured more than two-thirds of the parliamentary seats, enabling them to form the government. Their strategy includes inviting heads of government from SAARC member states and Middle Eastern countries, signaling a diplomatic emphasis on regional cooperation. BNP Joint Secretary General (Foreign Affairs) Humayun Kabir confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune that preparations are underway, although specific countries were not named.

The presence of foreign dignitaries is intended to highlight Bangladesh’s diplomatic priorities, focusing on strengthening ties within South Asia and the Middle East. This approach aligns with BNP’s foreign policy objectives, aiming to enhance regional collaboration and mutual support.

Indian Prime Minister Modi has already extended congratulations to BNP leader Tarique Rahman, acknowledging the party’s remarkable win and expressing India’s support for a democratic and progressive Bangladesh. The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami will serve as the main opposition party in the new parliament.
