The government of Bangladesh is initiating a comprehensive overhaul of the Bangladesh Railway to transform it into a profitable and service-oriented institution, as announced by Sheikh Rabiul Alam, the Minister of Road Transport and Bridges, Railways, and Shipping, on February 19, 2026, in Dhaka.

During an exchange meeting at Rail Bhaban, organized by the Ministry of Railways and Bangladesh Railway, the minister emphasized the need to address the financial losses that have plagued the railway sector for years. He outlined plans to prioritize infrastructure development, technology-driven management, anti-corruption measures, and improved passenger services.

The minister highlighted that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s election manifesto includes reviving the railway as a central pillar of the national transport system. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has issued directives to prevent ticket black marketing, curb corruption, and enhance passenger service standards.

Ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, officials have been instructed to ensure smooth and safe rail travel. Emphasis is placed on transparency in ticketing, maintaining schedules, and strengthening safety measures. Authorities are directed to prepare an action plan within 180 days based on the manifesto and identify ways to reduce travel time on the Dhaka–Chittagong route within a week.

State ministers and senior officials attended the meeting, expressing commitment to modernizing railway services, increasing revenue, and improving passenger experiences. The overhaul aims to position the railway as the backbone of sustainable public transport in Bangladesh.
