South Asian Desk is open to contributors. We publish reporting, analysis and opinion on the politics, economy, society, culture and sport of South Asia — and on the region’s diaspora. If you know a story we should be telling, we want to hear from you.
What we are looking for
- Current Affairs — reported pieces and explainers on politics, policy, security and diplomacy across the region.
- Business & Economy — markets, trade, technology, energy, labour and development.
- Opinions — argued commentary with a clear, original thesis.
- Sports — cricket and beyond, including the business and politics of sport.
- Culture & Society — literature, film, music, migration, gender, climate and everyday life.
We are especially interested in work from writers based in the region, in local languages-first reporting rendered for an English-reading audience, and in stories that are under-covered by international media.
Submission guidelines
- Length. Opinion and analysis: 800–1,200 words. Reported features: 1,200–2,000 words. Pitch first if you have something longer.
- Originality. Submissions must be your own work and previously unpublished, including on personal blogs, newsletters and social media.
- Sourcing. Every factual claim must be verifiable. Link to primary sources in the text and name your sources wherever possible.
- AI-generated copy. We do not publish text written by AI tools. Research assistance is fine; the writing and reporting must be yours.
- Images. Only send images you own or that are clearly licensed for reuse, with credit details included.
- Format. Paste your pitch or draft into the form below, or attach a .doc, .docx or .pdf file.
- Bio. Include two or three sentences about yourself and links to any previous work.
How to pitch
A good pitch is short. Tell us in a paragraph what the story is, why it matters now, and what you will do to report it. Add a line on why you are the right person to write it. If the piece is already written, send the full draft.
What happens next
- You will get an automatic confirmation as soon as your submission reaches us.
- Our editors review every submission and respond within 10 working days. If you have not heard from us by then, you are welcome to follow up or to place the piece elsewhere.
- Accepted pieces are edited for length, clarity, accuracy and house style. You will see the edited version before it is published.
- Published contributors get a byline and an author profile page on South Asian Desk. Where more than one person worked on a piece, we credit all of them.
