China Mediation Afghanistan-Pakistan Peace Talks: China has announced significant progress in peace negotiations between Afghanistan’s Taliban government and Pakistan, with talks resuming in the western Chinese city of Urumqi. The discussions follow weeks of intense fighting that have resulted in numerous casualties. China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, confirmed the advancement of the consultation process on April 3, 2026.

China Mediation Efforts in the Region

The Chinese government, under Xi Jinping, is playing a pivotal role in mediating the dialogue between Islamabad and Kabul. According to Mao Ning, the three parties have reached a consensus on specific operational modes, including media coverage, though further details remain undisclosed. This development marks a positive step as both nations express their willingness to continue talks.

The backdrop to these discussions is a surge in militant attacks in Pakistan, many attributed to the Taliban. Despite the renewed dialogue, violence persists, exemplified by a recent suicide bombing in Pakistan’s Bannu district, which resulted in multiple casualties. Pakistan frequently accuses Afghanistan of harboring militants responsible for attacks on its soil, a claim Kabul denies.

Historically, tensions escalated in February when Afghanistan’s Taliban government accused Pakistan of launching strikes in Kabul, causing civilian casualties. Pakistan justified these actions as targeting TTP hideouts, asserting an ‘open war’ with Afghanistan. The current talks aim to address these longstanding issues and foster regional stability. Further meetings are anticipated as part of China’s ongoing mediation efforts.
