India-Russia Relations: India and Russia have reinforced their strategic partnership in light of a volatile global environment, as discussed by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on May 13, 2026, in New Delhi. The meeting occurred ahead of the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting scheduled for May 14-15.

The discussions between Jaishankar and Lavrov focused on implementing decisions from the previous India-Russia summit, including a target to boost bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2030. Currently, trade between the two countries stands at nearly $60 billion. Both ministers emphasized the importance of derisking and diversification in their economic relations.

Jaishankar highlighted the steady growth in the partnership, particularly in economic and energy sectors, and stressed the value of political cooperation in current global uncertainties. ‘Our two nations share an interest in strengthening multipolarity and benefit from greater derisking and diversification,’ Jaishankar stated.

Lavrov affirmed Russia’s support for India’s priorities within BRICS and other international forums such as the UN, SCO, and G20. He noted the structured cooperation at all levels as beneficial for long-term planning and achieving strategic goals.

Looking forward, both countries aim to enhance connectivity and mobility of skills and talent, aligning with their shared interests in global governance and economic collaboration. The meeting sets the stage for further dialogues during the upcoming BRICS summit.
