Tarique Rahman Malaysia Visit

Tarique Rahman Malaysia visit began on Sunday night as the Bangladesh prime minister arrived in Kuala Lumpur on his first overseas trip since taking office, with labour migration, trade, investment and regional cooperation expected to dominate talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Rahman arrived in Malaysia with his wife, Dr Zubaida Rahman, and a high-level delegation after accepting an invitation from Anwar. The visit comes at a politically important moment for Dhaka, as the new government seeks to deepen ties with key Asian partners and secure better conditions for Bangladeshi workers abroad.

Tarique Rahman Malaysia Visit Begins At KLIA

Bangladesh state media reported that Rahman’s flight landed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Sunday, June 21, 2026, where Malaysia rolled out a red-carpet reception. Malaysian coverage said he was received at the Bunga Raya Complex by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for Religious Affairs Zulkifli Hasan.

Rahman and Dr Zubaida Rahman were accorded a guard of honour, while the national anthems of both countries were played. Bangladesh High Commissioner to Malaysia Manjurul Karim Khan Chowdhury and senior mission officials were also present during the reception.

Bangladesh reports said the route from the airport to the prime minister’s hotel in Kuala Lumpur was decorated with Bangladeshi and Malaysian flags. Rahman and his delegation are staying in Kuala Lumpur during the official visit.

Labour Market Placed On Number One Agenda

Bangladesh has placed labour migration at the centre of the Malaysia visit, Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam said before the prime minister’s departure.

Malaysia is one of the most important destinations for Bangladeshi migrant workers, particularly in manufacturing, construction, plantations and services. Worker recruitment, welfare protections, recruitment costs and legal employment channels are expected to feature prominently in the talks.

Earlier this year, Malaysian and Bangladeshi officials discussed ways to prevent worker exploitation and make recruitment more transparent, fair and efficient. Dhaka is expected to seek stronger safeguards for Bangladeshi workers while also pushing to expand legal labour-market access.

Anwar And Tarique To Hold Putrajaya Talks

Anwar is scheduled to formally receive Rahman on Monday, June 22, 2026, at the Perdana Putra Complex in Putrajaya. The two leaders are expected to hold a one-on-one meeting, followed by delegation-level talks.

Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry said the two sides are expected to review bilateral relations and explore cooperation in trade and investment, human resource management, semiconductors, energy, agriculture and education. Regional and international issues are also expected to be discussed.

Anwar will also host an official luncheon for Rahman and his delegation.

MoU And Exchanges Of Notes Expected

The two governments are expected to witness the exchange of one memorandum of understanding on cultural cooperation and two exchanges of notes linked to counter-terrorism research and investment promotion and facilitation.

Bangladeshi officials have also indicated that discussions may include cultural exchange and possible movement toward a free trade arrangement.

Trade And ASEAN Push Add Weight To Visit

Malaysia is one of Bangladesh’s key economic partners in Southeast Asia. In 2025, total trade between the two countries stood at RM12.18 billion, or about USD 2.84 billion, according to Malaysian official figures.

Malaysia’s exports to Bangladesh were valued at RM10.08 billion, led mainly by petroleum products. Imports from Bangladesh stood at RM2.10 billion, with textiles, apparel and footwear among the main items.

Bangladesh is also seeking Malaysian support for its efforts to deepen engagement with ASEAN, including its application for dialogue-partner status and interest in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership. Malaysia’s role in ASEAN gives the visit broader diplomatic importance beyond bilateral trade.

Background

This is Rahman’s first foreign visit since assuming office in February 2026. The choice of Malaysia as the first stop reflects Dhaka’s focus on migrant labour, trade, investment and Southeast Asian diplomacy.

The Malaysia visit is also part of a wider six-day foreign tour. After Kuala Lumpur, Rahman is expected to travel to China for a three-day official visit at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang. His China schedule is expected to include meetings with Li and President Xi Jinping, as well as participation in the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting of the New Champions in Dalian.

Bangladesh is expected to sign several bilateral instruments during the China leg, while infrastructure, investment and the Teesta River project are expected to be discussed.

What’s Next

The main diplomatic outcomes of the Tarique Rahman Malaysia visit are expected after the Putrajaya talks on Monday, June 22, 2026. The key areas to watch are worker recruitment reforms, investment facilitation, trade expansion, ASEAN-related support and the final list of signed agreements.

For Bangladesh, the visit is an early test of Rahman’s foreign-policy priorities. For Malaysia, it is an opportunity to strengthen ties with a major South Asian labour and trade partner while expanding cooperation in sectors such as energy, semiconductors, agriculture and education.
