Pakistan has launched a new platform for digital trade to strengthen its e-commerce ecosystem and foster regional business connectivity. Announced on July 11, 2025, at the inaugural GLOBE Pakistan Summit, the initiative aims to streamline online commerce and enhance cross-border trade through digital corridors. The platform, introduced by the Ministry of Commerce in collaboration with the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP), marks the country’s first formal effort to prioritize digital trade and regional integration.
The platform for digital trade is designed to support businesses by providing tools to simplify online transactions and improve access to international markets. It focuses on creating secure and efficient digital pathways, enabling small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to compete globally. The initiative aligns with Pakistan’s broader push toward a cashless economy, evidenced by recent advancements like the Islamabad City app, which has collected Rs15.5 billion in excise and taxation, and the upcoming Digital Pakistan ID project.
However, challenges remain. Traders have expressed concerns over new tax policies, including an 18% GST and mandatory digital invoicing, which some fear could push businesses toward the informal sector. Despite these hurdles, the platform is expected to drive economic growth by connecting Pakistani businesses with markets in neighboring countries and beyond, leveraging the country’s growing digital infrastructure.
This development reflects Pakistan’s commitment to modernizing its economy and fostering innovation in digital trade, positioning it as a competitive player in the global market.
