Fuel Price Hike Sparks Industry Concerns in Pakistan

A recent increase in fuel prices in Pakistan has raised significant concerns among business leaders and industry experts, who warn of severe economic repercussions. Petrol prices have risen by Rs5.36 per litre to Rs272.15, while high-speed diesel (HSD) has increased by Rs11.37 per litre to Rs284.35. These hikes are putting pressure on manufacturers and traders, threatening factory operations and exacerbating inflationary trends.

The Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) has highlighted that the rising costs of fuel, electricity, and gas, combined with heavy taxation, are eroding the competitiveness of Pakistani exports compared to regional players like India and Bangladesh. Industry representatives have called for the government to reverse the price hike to prevent factory closures, which could lead to widespread job losses. The increased fuel costs are also expected to drive up freight and public transport fares, directly impacting consumers.

Mian Zahid Hussain, a senior official from the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), described the price surge as a “ticking time bomb” for the economy. He noted that the hikes disproportionately affect middle- and lower-income households, particularly those relying on motorcycles, rickshaws, and small vehicles for daily commuting. The rising cost of diesel is also likely to increase expenses in transportation, agriculture, and food production, further straining businesses and the public.

Posts on X reflect growing public frustration, with users discussing the ripple effects of fuel price increases on daily life and the broader economy. Many express concerns about the affordability of essential goods and services as costs continue to climb.

The government faces mounting pressure to address these challenges and stabilize fuel prices to mitigate the economic fallout. Without swift action, the industry warns of a deepening crisis that could affect both businesses and consumers across Pakistan.
