A Delhi building collapse in the Indian capital’s Satya Niketan area left multiple residents trapped on Sunday afternoon, with police confirming that six people had been rescued from the debris, according to news agency ANI. It was not immediately clear how many people were inside the premises at the time the structure gave way, and rescue efforts continued into the evening as authorities worked to account for everyone who may have been present.
What Happened in the Multi-Storey Building Collapse
The building, located in South-West Delhi, was being used as guest accommodation and comprised a basement along with five upper floors. According to police, repair work was underway in the basement when the structure collapsed, around 1:30 pm local time. Reports from the scene indicated that the property functioned as paying guest, or PG, accommodation and was reportedly between 40 and 50 years old, a detail that has drawn attention given the building’s age relative to the extent of the damage.
Satya Niketan sits near the South Campus of Delhi University and is known for housing a large number of students, raising early concerns about how many residents may have been inside when the building fell. An eyewitness at the scene told ANI that cries for help could be heard from beneath the rubble as rescue operations got underway.
Rescue Operation Draws Multiple Agencies to the Site
Police, firefighters and personnel from India’s disaster response agencies responded to the site, with earthmovers used to clear debris and help rescuers reach those trapped inside. Teams from the Delhi Police, the Delhi Fire Service, the National Disaster Response Force and the State Disaster Response Force were among those deployed to the location, working in coordination to extract survivors from the wreckage.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta addressed the incident in a post on social media platform X, saying that all agencies were working in coordination, with every effort focused on the safe rescue of those affected. Delhi Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the collapse.

As rescue work progressed, officials confirmed that at least one resident had died after being pulled from the rubble, while additional people remained hospitalised, with some in critical condition. The final scale of casualties remained unclear in the hours following the collapse, and figures were still being verified as search teams continued to comb through the debris. Local lawmakers, including Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda, described the incident as extremely tragic and called for scrutiny of the conditions under which paying guest accommodations operate in the area, while stopping short of assigning blame while rescue work was still under way.

The Delhi building collapse has renewed scrutiny of ageing residential structures across the capital, particularly those converted into informal guest or student housing without documented safety inspections. Opposition parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party, have called for a high-level probe into the circumstances surrounding the collapse and greater accountability for building safety enforcement in the city.
As of Sunday evening, authorities had not disclosed the building’s ownership status in detail or confirmed the precise cause of the structural failure. The Delhi Police said the property’s owner was believed to reside in Gurugram, a detail that may factor into the investigation. Rescue operations were ongoing, with officials cautioning that the full extent of the incident, including the final number of those affected, would only become clear once the search of the site was complete.
