The All India N.R. Congress (AINRC), under the leadership of Chief Minister N. Rangaswamy, has successfully reclaimed power in the Puducherry Assembly elections held on May 7, 2026. The party, in coalition with allies Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Lok Janshakti Kisan Loktantrik (LJKL), and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), secured 18 out of the 30 available seats.
The AINRC’s continued dominance in Puducherry, which has been evident since 2011, further marginalized the Congress party, which managed to win only one seat. The AIADMK, which failed to secure any seats in the previous election, achieved a minor victory by winning one seat this time.
New entrant Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK) made a notable debut by winning two seats, while its ally, the Namadhu Makkal Katchi (NMK), won one seat. Additionally, three independent candidates emerged victorious in their respective constituencies.
Key figures in the election included N. Rangaswamy, who successfully contested from both Thattanchavady and Mangalam constituencies. Other significant victories were seen by DMK’s A.M.H. Nazeem in Karaikal South and BJP leaders A. Johnkumar in Mudaliarpet and A. Namassivayam in Mannadipet.
The election results reflect a continued shift in Puducherry’s political landscape, with the AINRC and its allies strengthening their hold. Looking ahead, the focus will be on how these parties will govern and address the region’s pressing issues.
