Bengaluru Property Tax: On April 16, 2026, Bengaluru authorities initiated a significant investigation into potential tax evasion involving over 23,000 property owners. These individuals have been issued show-cause notices for allegedly misreporting their built-up areas, resulting in an estimated tax loss of ₹688 crore to the city’s civic bodies.

Munish Moudgil, the Special Commissioner for Revenue and IT, revealed that the properties in question were identified through advanced drone survey data provided by the Revenue Department. This technology-driven approach was followed by meticulous field verifications to ensure the accuracy of the findings, covering nearly 170 of the 198 wards in the former Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike.

The use of drone technology marks a new era in urban tax administration, allowing for more precise and comprehensive property assessments. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance transparency and accountability in property tax collections, which have historically been plagued by inaccuracies and underreporting.

Looking ahead, this investigation could lead to significant policy shifts in how property taxes are assessed and collected across India. Authorities are expected to convene further discussions on April 30, 2026, to explore additional measures to prevent similar discrepancies in the future.
