On May 9, 2026, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar officially handed over an agro-processing facility in South Trinidad, a project realized through India’s assistance, in the presence of Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

Arriving from Paramaribo, Mr. Jaishankar concluded his three-nation tour aimed at strengthening India’s ties with the Caribbean, including Jamaica and Suriname. This facility is part of India’s SEEDS initiative, which seeks to enhance sustainable economic development in the Global South.

The newly inaugurated facility is expected to invigorate Trinidad and Tobago’s SME ecosystem, offering significant support to the local farming sector. “Delivering on another commitment made by PM @narendramodi in July 2025,” Mr. Jaishankar remarked on social media.

In addition to the facility’s inauguration, Mr. Jaishankar visited Nelson Island with PM Persad-Bissessar, commemorating the arrival of the first Indian immigrants, known as Girmitiyas, in 1845. A Quick Impact Project supported by India will preserve this shared heritage.

Earlier discussions between Mr. Jaishankar and PM Persad-Bissessar led to agreements on tourism development, solar energy initiatives, and the establishment of an Ayurveda Chair, reflecting a deepening of bilateral cooperation.
