India-UAE Cooperation: Both countries are set to formalize a strategic defence partnership, marking a significant milestone in bilateral relations. This development follows the recent visit of UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed to India, where both nations signed a Letter of Intent to enhance cooperation in various defence sectors.
The agreement, expected to be finalized by November 2026, aims to expand collaboration in defence industrial projects, cyber security, and counter-terrorism efforts. This partnership comes amid escalating tensions in the Persian Gulf, highlighted by Iran’s recent missile attack on Fujairah Port in the UAE.
Historically, the UAE has been a critical ally for India, particularly as a major energy supplier. In the fiscal year 2024-2025, India imported significant amounts of crude oil and gas from the Emirates, underscoring the economic interdependence between the two countries.
As regional dynamics evolve, the strategic partnership is poised to strengthen India’s position in West Asia, providing mutual benefits in energy security and counter-radicalization efforts. Prime Minister Modi’s upcoming visit to Abu Dhabi on May 18, 2026, is expected to further solidify this alliance.
