India-US Pact: On May 26, 2026, India and the United States signed a strategic bilateral framework to secure the supply, mining, and processing of critical minerals and rare earth elements. The agreement was announced by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, following discussions at the Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting.
The framework, described by Jaishankar as ‘timely and critical,’ aims to enhance cooperation across the entire critical minerals and rare earth supply chain. It includes mining, processing, recycling, and related investments, strengthening resilient and diversified supply chains.
Rubio emphasized the importance of India as a strategic partner for the United States, citing the agreement as a tangible example of their alliance. He noted the significance of ensuring reliable long-term access to critical minerals essential for high-tech electronics, clean energy technologies, defense systems, and electric vehicles.
This move comes amid global efforts to reduce reliance on single-source suppliers, particularly China, which dominates the global processing market. The agreement is seen as a testament to the strengthening partnership between Washington and New Delhi in a challenging global landscape.
Looking ahead, the partnership is expected to foster collaboration on financing and effective management of critical resources. Future meetings and collaborative projects are anticipated as both nations aim to secure their strategic interests.
