India-US Relations: On May 24, 2026, India and the United States took significant steps to strengthen their strategic partnership, focusing on defence and energy cooperation amidst ongoing tensions in West Asia. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held bilateral talks in New Delhi, addressing key issues impacting both nations.
The discussions, held at Hyderabad House, followed Rubio’s arrival in India for a four-day visit. The talks covered a wide range of topics, including trade, critical minerals, and technological collaboration. A central focus was the disruption of energy supplies due to the conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran, which has notably affected India’s access to crude oil.
Jaishankar emphasized India’s commitment to dialogue and diplomacy, advocating for the respect of international law and the necessity of resilient supply chains. He highlighted India’s unique position of maintaining strong relations with all parties involved in the West Asia conflict, including the US, Israel, and Iran.
Rubio, on his first official visit to India as Secretary of State, reaffirmed the US’s strategic partnership with India, dismissing concerns over any loss of momentum in bilateral relations. He underscored the importance of reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a critical international waterway, and preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Looking ahead, both nations are set to continue their collaboration in various sectors, with an upcoming Quad foreign ministers’ meeting on May 26 expected to further solidify their Indo-Pacific strategy.
