India is set to enforce a new traffic violations policy where multiple violations will lead to a temporary suspension of driving licenses. On February 27, 2026, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the introduction of a graded point system at a road safety event organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry in New Delhi.

Under this system, drivers caught committing offenses such as driving in the wrong direction will incur points. Accumulating 12 points will result in a six-month suspension of the driving license. For severe offenses like drinking and driving, licenses could be permanently revoked, Gadkari stated.

The policy aims to address the rising road crash fatalities in India, which reached 177,177 in 2024, marking a 2.5% increase from the previous year. The government is actively identifying high-risk corridors, junctions, and time patterns of accidents to mitigate these numbers.

Gadkari emphasized the need for accountability among states and districts with high accident rates. He highlighted the successful reduction of accidents by 50% in Nagpur through coordinated efforts. Upcoming meetings with district collectors and MPs will focus on addressing black spots and enhancing road safety measures across the nation.
