Pakistan has solidified its position as a pivotal diplomatic force in regional peace efforts, according to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. On May 5, 2026, he announced that Pakistan had successfully facilitated unprecedented talks between Iran and the United States, marking a significant achievement in regional diplomacy.
Speaking at the 6th International Paigham-e-Islam Conference in Islamabad, Prime Minister Sharif emphasized the unity of the Muslim Ummah and the essential role of religious scholars in promoting harmony. He highlighted Pakistan’s critical role in bringing Iran and the United States to the negotiating table for the first time since 1979, with discussions taking place in Islamabad on April 11 and 12.
The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to both Iran and the United States for accepting Pakistan’s invitation and agreeing to a ceasefire, reflecting the international community’s trust in Pakistan’s diplomatic capabilities. He also acknowledged the support of Saudi Arabia, China, and Turkiye, along with other friendly nations, in these efforts.
Prime Minister Sharif paid tribute to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for his contributions to maintaining regional peace. He also commended Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for their efforts in facilitating the negotiations.
Looking ahead, Prime Minister Sharif expressed optimism for sustainable peace in the region and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strong ties with Saudi Arabia, particularly in defense cooperation. He reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to the protection of Haramain Sharifain and its unwavering support for the causes of Palestine and Kashmir.
