Assam Voter List: Election officials in Assam released the state’s final electoral roll on February 10, 2026, following a special electoral roll revision process that resulted in a 0.97% decrease in the number of registered voters. The final list now comprises 24.9 million names, down from the draft list published in December.
The office of Assam Chief Electoral Officer stated that the draft voter list initially included 25,201,624 names, which has now been reduced by 243,485 to 24,958,139. The final list includes 12,482,213 male voters, 12,475,583 female voters, and 343 voters of the third gender.
This revision process, distinct from the Special Intensive Revision conducted in other states, did not involve physical verification by booth-level officers. Instead, it focused on public submissions for new inclusions, objections, or corrections.
The process has faced scrutiny, particularly from opposition parties, who accuse the ruling BJP of manipulating the process to exclude certain groups. Complaints have been filed with the Election Commission, and there are calls for a thorough audit of the objections raised.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been vocal about ensuring that Bengali-speaking Muslims, referred to derogatorily as ‘Miyas,’ are not included in the voter list. He assured that indigenous Assamese were unaffected by this process. The controversy continues as assembly elections approach, likely in March-April.
