Foreign Observers flock to Bangladesh: A significant international presence is set to monitor Bangladesh’s 13th general election and the referendum on the July National Charter, scheduled for February 11, 2026. The event will see participation from 394 foreign election observers and 197 journalists, marking a substantial increase compared to previous elections.
Among the observers, 80 are from international organizations, 239 are bilateral representatives, and 51 are affiliated with global institutions. Noteworthy organizations include the Asian Network for Free Elections, the Commonwealth Secretariat, and the International Republican Institute.
The number of observers has more than doubled since the controversial election on January 7, 2024. Previous elections saw significantly fewer observers, highlighting the growing global interest in Bangladesh’s political processes.
Lamiya Morshed, Senior Secretary and SDG Coordinator, expressed gratitude for the international community’s confidence in Bangladesh’s ability to conduct a fair election. She emphasized the experience and credentials of the observers as reassuring.
High-profile participants include former Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo and Chief Election Commissioner of Bhutan Deki Pema. Over 2,000 candidates from more than 50 political parties are contesting, with the election coinciding with a crucial national referendum.
