Pakistan has reported significant casualties among Afghan Taliban forces during its ongoing military campaign, Operation Ghazab lil-Haq. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar announced on March 8, 2026, that 583 Taliban operatives were killed and over 795 injured in the operation, which was initiated in response to what Islamabad termed as unprovoked actions from the Afghan side of the border.
The operation was launched following intense clashes along the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier. Afghan forces had fired on multiple locations, prompting a swift military response from Pakistan. Since the operation’s inception, the conflict between the neighboring countries has escalated, with the Pakistani military targeting 64 locations within Afghanistan.
According to Minister Tarar, Pakistani forces have destroyed 242 Taliban checkposts and captured 38 others. Additionally, 213 tanks, armored vehicles, and artillery guns have been obliterated. The operation also saw the Pakistan Army thwart an infiltration attempt near the Chaman sector, where security forces successfully repelled a group of terrorists attempting to breach the border fence.
This latest escalation follows a series of retaliatory actions over the past year. Pakistan has accused Afghanistan of harboring leaders of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a claim Kabul denies. The ongoing hostilities have led to casualties and infrastructure damage on both sides, with trade between the countries being suspended after border crossings were closed in October 2025.
Looking ahead, the situation remains tense, with both nations likely to continue military engagements. Diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation have yet to yield significant results, and the international community watches closely as tensions threaten regional stability.
