Assam Elections: On March 26, 2026, the political landscape of Assam witnessed a significant shift as 67 candidates, including Aminul Islam, withdrew from the upcoming assembly elections. Islam, who previously represented the Mankachar seat for the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), had recently joined the National People’s Party (NPP) before retracting his nomination.

Initially, 815 candidates had filed 1,389 nomination papers across 126 constituencies in Assam. Following scrutiny, 789 were deemed eligible to contest. However, the withdrawal of 67 candidates has reduced the number of contestants to 722, according to the Assam state election office.

The Election Commission (EC) had earlier rejected the nomination of a Congress candidate from Barpeta due to discrepancies in the required documents. This decision underscores the rigorous scrutiny process in place for the elections.

Voting is scheduled for April 9, 2026, with counting set for May 4. This election is crucial as it will determine the political direction of Assam, amidst shifting party allegiances and strategic withdrawals.
