Bangladesh Energy Policy: In response to the ongoing global energy crisis, Bangladesh has announced that all shops, commercial establishments, and shopping malls will close by 8pm. This decision was revealed on April 2, 2026, by the Bangladesh Shop Owners’ Association through a press release, following a joint meeting of the Dhaka Metropolitan Shop Owners’ Association and the national association’s Standing Committee.

Under this new regulation, all shops, malls, and commercial outlets must cease operations after 8pm. However, hotels, pharmacies, emergency services, and grocery or vegetable markets are exempted from this rule. The association emphasized that this measure is in the interest of both the public and business owners to help conserve electricity and fuel.

Historically, Bangladesh has faced significant challenges in managing its energy resources, particularly during periods of heightened global demand. This latest policy is part of a broader effort to align with international energy-saving practices and mitigate the impact of the current crisis.

Looking forward, this policy may have significant implications for the daily operations of businesses and consumers alike. Further discussions and evaluations are expected as the nation adapts to these changes.
