UK-Pak Energy Sector Cooperation: On April 7, 2026, British High Commissioner Jane Marriott met with Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Petroleum, Ali Pervaiz Malik, in Islamabad to discuss the evolving regional situation and its implications for global energy markets. The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in Pakistan’s energy and minerals sectors.
Both officials exchanged views on the ongoing regional crisis and its impact on petroleum supply chains, price volatility, and overall energy sector security. They emphasized how global price fluctuations affect Pakistan’s import-dependent energy sector and the government’s strategy to manage these external shocks.
Jane Marriott commended Pakistan’s diplomatic role in easing regional tensions and promoting global peace. She highlighted Pakistan’s effective mediation efforts involving key stakeholders such as the United States and Iran during a period of heightened instability.
Marriott also praised Pakistan’s handling of the petroleum supply situation, noting that despite international uncertainty, the country ensured uninterrupted availability of petroleum products, avoiding market disruptions.
Minister Malik reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to peace and stability through dialogue and diplomatic engagement. He emphasized the government’s proactive measures to maintain supply continuity and avoid repeating past populist approaches that could undermine economic achievements.
Malik expressed gratitude to countries like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Oman for facilitating petroleum supplies during uncertain times. He recalled Qatar’s past support, providing LNG at favorable rates and renegotiating contracts to aid Pakistan’s energy sector amidst market volatility.
Highlighting domestic efforts, Malik praised local exploration and production companies for maintaining production levels and supporting national energy security. He noted that fertilizer prices in Pakistan are significantly lower than in neighboring countries, benefiting from indigenous gas production.
The UK and Pakistan agreed to enhance bilateral engagement through technical cooperation and institutional partnerships, aiming to promote energy security, investment facilitation, and sustainable development in Pakistan’s energy and mineral sectors.
