US-Iran Talks: Pakistan is gearing up for a potential second round of negotiations between the United States and Iran, which are likely to be held in Islamabad. This US-Iran talks initiative follows a previous attempt to resolve a conflict that has severely impacted energy supplies and daily life across the Middle East, according to two government sources familiar with the developments.
Pakistan played a pivotal role in brokering a 14-day ceasefire between the US and Iran, culminating in high-stakes discussions attended by senior delegations from both nations. Although these talks did not achieve the desired breakthrough, the ceasefire remains in effect, and anticipation for a second round of negotiations is increasing.
Sources indicated that preparations began on April 14, 2026, with a focus on ensuring comprehensive security arrangements. President Donald Trump expressed optimism on April 14 about the possibility of direct US-Iran talks resuming in Pakistan, though the exact timing remains uncertain.
The initial Islamabad Talks, which concluded without resolution, were hosted at a luxury hotel in the city. US Vice President JD Vance and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf led their respective delegations, and they are expected to return for the upcoming discussions.
While high-level talks are anticipated by the end of this week or early next week, Pakistani sources noted the possibility of preliminary low-level discussions to set the stage. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is currently on a regional tour, which may delay the high-level meetings.
