Production at the DAP Fertilizer Company Limited in Chittagong, Bangladesh, was halted on April 18, 2026, due to a critical shortage of ammonia, a primary raw material necessary for urea fertilizer production. The shutdown occurred at 8:00 pm, as confirmed by Alamgir Jalil, Manager (Administration) at DAPFCL.

The plant, which relies on ammonia supplies from Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Limited (CUFL) and Karnaphuli Fertilizer Company Limited (KAFCO), has been affected by the shutdown of these suppliers since March 4, 2026, due to a gas shortage. This disruption has forced DAPFCL to cease operations indefinitely until ammonia supplies resume.

DAPFCL, established under the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) to promote balanced use, is located in Rangadia, Anwara. It has two units, each capable of producing 800 tons of DAP fertilizer daily. Since its inception in 2006, the plant has been a crucial player in meeting the agricultural sector’s demand for compound fertilizers containing nitrogen and phosphorus.

The ongoing supply chain issues pose significant risks to Bangladesh’s agricultural productivity, with potential long-term impacts if the situation is not resolved promptly. Stakeholders are closely monitoring developments, hoping for a swift resumption of operations at CUFL and KAFCO.
