The water level at Mullaperiyar Dam has reached 110.95 feet as of May 9, 2026, amidst ongoing concerns about water management between the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The maximum permissible level for the dam is 142 feet, and current inflow measures 1,580 cusecs with a discharge of 200 cusecs.

In comparison, the Vaigai Dam reports a water level of 27.03 feet against its maximum capacity of 71 feet. The inflow to Vaigai stands at 29 cusecs, while the discharge is 72 cusecs. The combined storage in the Periyar credit is recorded at 1,232.03 million cubic feet.

Recent rainfall data indicates significant precipitation in the region, with Mullaperiyar Dam receiving 16.8 mm and other areas like Sothupparai and Thekkadi receiving 16.4 mm and 10.8 mm respectively. This rainfall contributes to the inflow levels and necessitates careful monitoring.

Historically, the management of water levels in these dams has been a contentious issue between Tamil Nadu and Kerala, often requiring intervention at the federal level to ensure equitable water distribution and safety. The current situation underscores the importance of cooperative water management strategies.

Looking forward, authorities from both states are expected to convene in the coming weeks to discuss strategies for managing inflow and discharge rates, especially with the onset of the monsoon season. This meeting will be crucial in addressing the safety concerns associated with dam water levels and ensuring sustainable water resource management.
