Bangladesh police have detained a former soldier, Mohammad Rahed Hossain Mahed, on May 16, 2026, following an extensive manhunt. The arrest occurred near the Indian border in the northeastern district of Moulvibazar, as authorities responded to threats targeting key national sites.

The 23-year-old suspect is alleged to be associated with the radical Islamist group Dawlatul Islam Neo-JMB. According to police, Mahed was inspired by the ideology of the banned outfit, which has been linked to previous acts of violence in Bangladesh.

In response to warnings of potential attacks on airports, parliament, and places of worship, security measures were heightened across the country. Police indicated that the suspects planned to use sharp weapons, firearms, or explosive devices.

Bangladesh has a history of attacks by homegrown militant groups, including the 2016 Dhaka bakery attack that resulted in 22 fatalities. The government continues to combat these threats, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and swift action.

The recent arrest underscores ongoing counterterrorism efforts in Bangladesh, as authorities work to prevent future attacks and maintain national security. Further investigations are expected to reveal more about the extent of the plot.
