India-Norway Partnership: On May 18, 2026, India and Norway elevated their bilateral relations to a green strategic partnership, focusing on cooperation in health, space, and digitalization. The agreement was formalized during a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in Norway.

This visit marked Modi’s first trip to Norway in over four decades. The discussions centered on enhancing trade and investment, with a significant focus on the green transition and renewable energy. The geopolitical tensions, including the war in Ukraine and conflicts in West Asia, were also part of the dialogue.

Modi highlighted the importance of this partnership, stating that it combines India’s scale and talent with Norway’s technology and capital to develop global solutions in clean energy and green shipping. Støre emphasized the necessity of standing together for a rule-based order amidst rising protectionism and geopolitical tensions.

The partnership is only the second of its kind for India, following a similar agreement with Denmark in 2020. It includes Memorandums of Understanding in health services, digital health, and space cooperation, aiming to foster collaboration in high-tech health services and expand space cooperation.

The two leaders also discussed the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement with the European Free Trade Association, aiming to attract $100 billion in investments and create a million jobs in India over 15 years. Modi expressed gratitude to Norway for its support against terrorism and emphasized the shared commitment to eradicating all forms of terrorism.

Looking ahead, the partnership is expected to deepen cooperation in sustainability, ocean energy, and polar research, with Norway’s involvement in the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative. This collaboration aims to strengthen maritime security and the marine economy.
