India Vietnam Relations: The two nations have taken significant steps to enhance their defence partnership, focusing on maritime security and strategic cooperation. On May 19, 2026, India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held bilateral talks with Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister General Phan Van Giang in Hanoi.

The discussions emphasized collaboration in maritime security, defence industry, military training, cyber security, and regional stability in the Indo-Pacific. Both leaders reviewed global security developments and stressed the importance of peace, stability, and freedom of navigation in the region.

The two nations agreed to expand cooperation through regular dialogues, joint military exercises, and exchange programs. Rajnath Singh reiterated India’s commitment to supporting Vietnam’s defence modernization efforts under the bilateral framework.

General Phan Van Giang acknowledged India’s ongoing support, highlighting the strong strategic partnership between the countries. The ministers inaugurated a language lab at the Air Force Officers’ College in Vietnam, established with Indian assistance.

Additionally, an Artificial Intelligence lab will be set up at the Telecommunications University in Nha Trang. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between India’s Military College of Telecommunications Engineering and Vietnam’s Telecommunications University on cooperation in AI and Quantum Technology.

Rajnath Singh also met with Vietnam’s President and General Secretary To Lam, reaffirming the commitment to deepen cooperation in defence, trade, and connectivity under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The visit included a tribute to former Vietnamese President Ho Chi Minh on his 136th birth anniversary.
