Karnataka will enforce a 61-day fishing ban starting June 1 across its coastal districts to protect marine biodiversity. The ban, lasting until July 31, aims to safeguard fish species during their breeding season, a critical period for maintaining fish populations.

The regulation, issued by the Karnataka Fisheries Department, prohibits mechanised and traditional boats with engines exceeding 10 horsepower from fishing activities. Boats with engines up to 10 horsepower are exempt, allowing small-scale fishermen to continue operations.

Fishermen violating this order will face strict penalties, including the loss of diesel subsidies for a year. They will also be liable under the Karnataka Marine Fishing (Regulation) Act of 1986, which governs fishing activities in the state.

The decision to impose the ban during the breeding season is crucial for preventing overfishing and ensuring sustainable fish stocks. Although there is a push to extend the ban to three months, consensus among states along the West Coast is yet to be reached. Extending the ban could significantly enhance fish production in the region.
