On May 24, 2026, Bangladesh’s Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed met with Nicolas Fleury, the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delegation in Bangladesh, at the Bangladesh Secretariat in Dhaka. The meeting focused on the continued collaboration to address the Rohingya crisis and enhance the country’s prison and law enforcement systems.
During the discussions, Minister Ahmed expressed gratitude for the ICRC’s ongoing humanitarian and medical assistance to the Rohingya refugees. He emphasized Bangladesh’s dedication to keeping the crisis in the spotlight of international attention and requested the ICRC’s sustained support in managing this prolonged humanitarian challenge.
The ICRC reaffirmed its commitment to Bangladesh, with Fleury highlighting submitted recommendations for modernizing the Jail Code and proposals aimed at improving healthcare services inside prisons. The meeting underscored the necessity of international-standard training for law enforcement, with Fleury expressing interest in providing first aid and human rights training for police personnel.
Minister Ahmed assured full cooperation with the ICRC and requested skilled trainers for advanced-level courses. He reiterated Bangladesh’s commitment to International Humanitarian Law and the Geneva Conventions, appreciating the ICRC’s technical assistance in these areas.
The meeting was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, including Additional Secretary Dr. Ziauddin Ahmed, Joint Secretary Rebeka Khan, and Deputy Secretary Begum Minara Nazmeen. The discussions concluded with a mutual agreement to continue strengthening institutional support and humanitarian cooperation.
