On May 24, 2026, the foreign ministers of fourteen countries, including Pakistan, condemned the opening of a Somaliland embassy in Jerusalem, labeling it “illegal and unacceptable.”
The joint statement, issued on Sunday, was signed by the foreign ministers of Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkiye, Indonesia, Djibouti, Somalia, Palestine, Oman, Sudan, and Yemen.
The ministers declared that the embassy’s opening is a blatant violation of international law and relevant United Nations resolutions, infringing on the legal and historical status of Jerusalem.
They reiterated their categorical rejection of unilateral measures that aim to legitimize entities or arrangements contravening international law, emphasizing that East Jerusalem has been occupied Palestinian territory since 1967.
The statement also expressed support for Somalia’s territorial integrity, rejecting any unilateral actions undermining Somali unity and sovereignty. Somalia has historically opposed recognition of Somaliland.
